Inside Four Walls: Seniors 2011...gone

Today was the last day of school for the seniors this year, of course they will still be at school for graduation practice, but classes are done for them.

I have a class of all seniors this year and we took our final on Monday, so that gave us 3 days of "extra time". So instead of throwing parties or letting them screw around for 3 days straight I had them watch some of the best episodes of Scrubs. These are the ones we watched, funny thing is that these are considered some of the best episodes, and for good reason. You can click the link to watch the full episodes on youtube or just watch the clips.

My Old Lady

My Five Stages

My Screw Up

My Lunch

My Fallen Idol

My Finale (not on Youtube...sorry)

All great episodes. By the time we hit today and watched My Finale, the students were tearing up and crying because of course My Finale is about JD leaving Sacred Heart and the students are leaving school. Believe it or not, a couple were able to see the reason for me choosing that as the last episode to show them.

Inside Four Walls: Prom

I don't think people outside of education realize how much has changed from even 10 years ago. It used to be if you wanted to go to prom, you asked the girl. Now? It's a whole big production, seriously it's like these guys are asking the girl to get married. It's a joke and a waste of time. Think about how much time went into this. Now, that is how much time that was spend not studying for a test or doing homework for a class...yeah let's tie test scores to teacher's salary.

By the way, this took place at the other high school in our district, so this is what we deal with. Good times, right? I always tell my male students not to make a big deal out of asking a girl to prom. And if I find out they did, I will take their "Man Card" away from them. Funny thing is, years after I started saying this, I saw this Scrubs episode...with Man Cards...classic!

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: If Only...

...they ended Scrubs with season 8 and called season 9 something else.

Scrubs was a great show, make no mistake about it. The writing was quick, the acting was superb, and there were so many twists that you didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Season 8 was the first season on ABC and towards the end of the season it was almost a guarantee that Scrubs was done. So what did they do? Simply make possibly the best series finale episode ever! I talked about it after it aired here. Just watch the final scenes, if you were a fan of Scrubs there is now way you could watch this without getting a little teary eyed.

JD finally hearing Dr. Cox share his feelings about him;

JD remembering the people of Sacred Heart;

Finally, JD's vision of the future;

Freakin awesome stuff there. That's how you end a show. The music, the projection of his future on his face and camera work...perfect. I would be hard pressed to come up with a better series finale. Well, as I mentioned before, Scrubs continued on for one more season...unfortunately.

Season 9 had it's moments, but when you watch that and then watch something like this;

oh man...how bad was that? Seriously, moving to a med school? Just call it something else. Not Scrubs. There was no JD after 6 episodes, no Carla, no Janitor, no Ted, no Todd (besides bit parts), no Kelso (for the most part), not a lot of Elliot, no Keith...just Turk and Cox. Cox changed right away by taking a protege, which went against everything we knew about him for 8 seasons.

The new doctors weren't too bad. Cole was probably the funniest just cause he was so out there. Drew was a combination of JD (sensitive) and Cox (sense of humor & attitude). Lucy was the new JD, but she was more of an annoying Elliot. Jo was a leftover from season 8 and she was solid in her role.

Could this have made it as a different show? Who knows. But more than anything it sort of tarnished the previous 8 seasons of Scrubs. It lacked so much of what we had come to love, but taken by itself it isn't too bad. So my recommendation? Watch it, but forget everything you loved about Scrubs and expected to see again. Kind of like Battlestar Galactica, the new one was good, but you first had to forget everything about the original.

Music Non Stop: Neil Diamond

Ok so for you regular visitors you might notice the weekly artists on the side bar to the right. So you might be shocked to see that this week Neil Diamond tops the list with 17 times. Now, I could say my wife was listening to iTunes and those were her songs, but I have to admit it was me.

I really don't have a problem with Neil Diamond. My wife introduced me to his music in college. I made fun of him at first because the way he sings is more of melodic talking. I would always do an impression of him when we listened to him. I thought I was pretty good, but my wife probably thought otherwise.

Then along came Scrubs. I was watching it one day and saw an episode where all of a sudden Turk sings Jimmy Crack Corn as Neil Diamond. Hilarious! I remember my wife not thinking it was that funny, but I rewound it a couple more times and laughed some more.

Scrubs actually put Neil Diamond into the show a couple of times. They played his music in the background and had a small storyline about a Neil Diamond concert...watch the end of this video to watch Turk sing America...he's so good at it.

I actually don't mind listening to Neil Diamond anymore and he does have a place in the history of music. BTW, the first Neil Diamond song I heard and imitated was Play Me.

I still think I do a good job on the impression.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Scrubs - Med School

So way back in May I talked about Scrubs' season (series at the time) finale. There was little chance of a spin off because Zach Braff (J.D.) had said he was moving on. Well, something happened and Scrubs Season 9 was a go.

I was interested in this because I read some interviews about just how much the show was changing. Gone was Carla, the Janitor, Ted, and for most of the season J.D. and Elliot. How could a show that was built on an ensemble cast survive? Oh I forgot the biggest change, the hospital was gone and now they were professors at med school.

I mentioned last May about the dangers of continuing a show after the main start left ala Spin City. It's a hard act to follow. They learned by changing the setting and the shows creator tried to change the name to Scrubs: Med School. ABC said no, but on the title screen after it flashes Scrubs, med school does appear in the corner.

So what is the new show like? Well the new show focuses on Lucy, Drew, and Cole. Jo (from season 8) returns and does a great job. I would have liked to have seen the other interns from season 8 return (Sunny does show up in one episode), but they rebooted completely. Watching the first 4 -5 episodes is painful, it was like watching Spin City all over again. I couldn't get past no Janitor or Ted. Even the new building distracted me. The writers did a nice job of establishing the new characters and I think that the only one that worked right away was Drew. He reminds me of a young Dr. Cox at times. Lucy is supposed to be a combination of J.D. and Elliot. While Drew is totally new, a white kid who thinks he cool with his ghetto slang. It was really annoying at first, but now it works. Unfortunately, I feel like they made J.D. and Turk even more "flamboyant".

After the first few "awkward" episodes, the show is starting to hit its stride. The last 3 episodes are great. Watching Lucy realize she likes Cole was classic Scrubs. Having Cox's wife, Jordan, return was great as well. I really think this show can be a success like Spin City was for the next 3-4 years. Unfortunately, ABC is showing the entire season in like 5 weeks. That's right, an entire season in a month - month and a half. As I write this, there are only like 4 more new episodes left. I hope it gets another season to get going, but I don't think it will.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Scrubs

2 posts in one week? what the frak?

As you can tell I am still adjusting to life without BSG, which ended about a month ago. Friday nights are a little less enjoyable without it, but I have managed with The Soup, PTI, and Scrubs. Well scratch another one of the list, Scrubs is supposedly done.

They aired their season (series?) finale this past week. It focused on J.D.'s last day at Scared Heart. I have seen lots of finales (obviously) and this one ranks up their as one of the best. The writers have always done a great job of balancing humor with emotions. I remember the first episode I saw was the one where Brendon Fraiser (yes him) *spoilers* died. I remember laughing so hard at times during the episode, but then wiping tears away at the end.

Scrubs has done it all. The finale was no different. Watching J.D. all episode trying to get Dr. Cox to tell him how he felt, only to keep getting rejected was very sad. Then when it looked like it wasn't going to happen...bam it did. Awesome writing and acting. And then the last scene where J.D. "sees" his future was a great way to end the show.

There is talk of a spin off with some of the interns that were introduced this season. A few weeks ago I was all for it, but after this ending...I doubt they could top it. Rename the show, but don't call it Scrubs. We saw what happened when Spin City tried to go on without Michael J. Fox. The show was still funny, but it lost a lot of the original magic. Side note, the creators are the same.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: More Spin City

I forgot to mention one of the cooler things about Spin City. Not only was it a great show, but it was created by the same guy that created Scrubs (we all know how I feel about that show). Anyway, a majority of the cast of Spin City has appeared at least once on Scrubs...as different characters, but still cool none the less.

Let's look at the cast of Spin City;
Michael J. Fox
Alan Ruck
Michael Boatman
Heather Locklear
Barry Bostwick
Richard Kind
Alex Chaplin
Connie Britton
Victoria Dillard
Jennifer Eposito
Charlie Sheen

Out of that cast all but the last 5 have been on Scrubs. That's a pretty big feat to get those stars to be on the show. It goes to show you how much they liked working for the creator of the series. BTW, Charlie Sheen probably hasn't been on the show because he has been busy with his own show, Two and a Half Men, which airs on a different network.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Top T.V. shows for me

Alright, it's obviously summer time and that means reruns. So let me share with you some of my favorite t.v. shows on the air right now.

1. Scrubs - Is there a better t.v. show on right now? The writing, acting, and directing is all top notch. I found this show in syndication on Comedy Central and in one the first episode I ever saw I laughed and cried within 10 minutes of each other. Not too many shows can say that. The never-ending story of J.D. and Elliot seems to be making another return for the last season (that's the rumor I read). The entire cast is great from J.D., to Turk, to even Ted, but my favorite has to be Dr. Cox. His sense of humor is great. I think we all wish that we could say the things he says at work. Here is a clip of some of his best season one moments.

2. Battlestar Galactica - Ok so if Scrubs is the best comedy on right now than BSG is the best drama on right now. Seriously, the "reimagining" of the classic 70's version is so good. If you were a fan of the original you need to forget everything. Characters have changed sexes, races, and some became Cylons. It took me a half of a season to let go of what I knew and that's when I started to really enjoy it. The bad news is that this show is going off the air after season four. I see this as a good thing, you don't want to have boring scripts and "jump the shark". For those who don't know the BG story follow the link. Now this is technically a sci-fi show, but last season most episodes didn't even leave the ship. The really crappy part is that the season finale was a while ago and we still have to wait until NEXT JANUARY FOR THE CONCLUSION!!!! BTW, there is a free video on Itunes that tells the story up to season 3.
Battlestar Galactica Homepage

3. Two and a Half Men - This show has kind of jumped the shark after Candi left, but it still has its moments. The chemistry that Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer is great. Once again, some great acting and writing going on here. Some of the stories have become more adult oriented as the show has progressed, but it is still very enjoyable. I think what's makes this show work for me is the interaction between the "does what's right brother" and the "do what I want brother". Throw in an ex-wife, grumpy maid, and a lazy son and you get a solid t.v. show.
Two and a Half Men Homepage

4. America's Funniest Homevideos (AFV) - ok this show needs no introduction. It's just a classic show. I never get tired of watching people get scared, falling off of bikes, crashing into anything...it just works. America is full of idiots so this could go on for a long time.
AFV Homepage

5. Pardon the Interuption - so this isn't technically a prime time show, it still is one of the best sports show out there. Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon discuss the day's sport stories and some celebrity gossip as well. To listen to sports guys talk about American Idol is pretty funny. The nice thing is that Tony is on Monday Night Football and Wilbon now does the NBA for ABC.

Honorable Mention:

The Batman
- yes the cartoon. Listen cartoons aren't for little kids anymore. I think it started with the Batman: The Animated Series back in the 1990's. The writing was more complicated and the artwork was darker. Well this version of Batman started out rough, almost like an anime style of Batman. In season 3, we got Batgirl. In season 4, we got Robin. now as a comic book nerd this pissed me off because everyone knows Robin came into the picture first. But I digress. At the end of season 4 we saw the introduction of the Justice League. Now this has peaked my interest because Justice League and Justice League Unlimited were two of my favorite shows of all time (more on them later). So I can't say where this Batman will rank. It is getting better so I will wait and see.

Alright so those shows are still on. Next time I will look at my favorite shows that aren't on anymore.
