The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Two Starbucks

Where was I when this photo came out? I am a huge Battlestar Galactica fan...seriously huge. The new show was great and hopefully the latest spin off Blood & Chrome will be solid as well...hopefully a little bit faster pace than Caprica.

Anyway, apparently this was taken before the new show aired.  The man on the left was the original Starbuck.  The girl on the left, the new Starbuck.  You read that correctly, they changed the sex of one of the two main characters.  Anyway, Dirk Benedict played nice for the promo tour, but then ripped the show when it aired.  I knew he didn't like the new show, which is why I freaked out when I thought this was a current photo and not an 8 year old one.

The original Starbuck was one of my favorite characters of all time, so to turn him into a her pissed me off a bit.  However, much like the new Star Trek movie, if you are able to forget everything you remembered about the original show then the new one was actually pretty good.  I always hoped Dirk would find his way back to Galactica like Richard Hatch did, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: BSG Final Season & Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Well another 2 weeks and another post. I talked to our tech guys and he told me that our district is still working on a separate log in for teachers that isn't as strict as student log ins. Only time will tell.

Anyway, on to the subject at hand. It's been almost one year since the rag tag fleet found Earth only to find it destroyed by a nuclear war. The episode was great. Let's face it though, it had been so long (9 months) that anything was going to make me happy. But it didn't disappoint, highlights for me:
- The 13th Colony was all Cylons, and they had a civil war and destroyed each other on earth.
- Starbuck finds her own dead body...WTF?!?!?
- Dee kills herself (didn't see that coming[in fact it ranked up there with Boomer shooting Adama during the first season as shocking moments go])
- President gives up hope (what would Obama say?)
- 5th Cylon is "revealed" to be Ellen who died last season
Basically a ton more questions and a great episode can't wait for Fridays again.

The other show I am really loving these days is Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Now before Episode III came out they had a regular cartoon version which hits some of the highlights taking place before the last movie. This show is CGI and tells more of the story of the war itself. I have no idea how many seasons/episodes it will have, but I am hoping for a lot. The animation is the best I have ever seen on a tv show. I mean the prequels were full of CGI and there are times (space battles) when it seems like you are watching a movie. You can't really see Anikin's turn yet, but you know it's coming because he has a padawan, Ahsoka Tano. Now she is destined to bite the big one somewhere during this show because she doesn't turn up during Episode III. The other nice thing about the show is that it doesn't focus on Anakin all the time (like the cartoon version). We have episodes where Anakin and Obi Wan don't even appear. How about an episode without Jedis? Does it work...yep. The Star Wars universe is so big there is a ton to explore.

My only complaint is Jar Jar...yes he makes appearances (2 so far). I just hate Jar Jar, the fans hate Jar Jar why must we be forced to watch him? By the way, this isn't a kids show either...lots of death and destruction. This series was made for the fans. I really want a show that takes place between Episodes III & IV, but this will do for now. I hear the live action show will cover those 20 years.

Next post...who knows.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: BSG last season

trying to get caught up on posts...so let me start off with my favorite show on t.v. right now, Battlestar Galactica. So they are pulling the "let's show half the season then wait 9 months before we finish it" crap again. After season 3 we were left with the revelation of 4 of the final five cylons. We had to wait over a year before the new season...thanks in part to the writer's strike. So now we leave the mid season with the fleet finally finding Earth...except it is totally destroyed.

There are so many solid storylines going on right now. Who is the final cylon, did Starbuck die, is Tory going to screw over the fleet, when is the President going to die, and what's up with the "Last Supper" Picture?

This photo is supposed to tell secrets of the final season. Ok that's cool. But the picture is "changing" The President (far left) used to have a candle in front of her...it's now gone. And Six (red dress) was positioned more left and now is moving to the center...WTF?!?! And the missing seat is supposed to be the final cylon. So everyone talks about how the last cylon can't be in the picture. It is driving me crazy and I can't wait until next January to find out the ending.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Battlestar Galatica

Third episode in and I gotta say it feelsl ike I am watching a movie 1 hour at a time. That can be a really good thing or a bad thing. Fortunately, the writes of BSG have made it a good thing. The show has a season 1 type feel to it right now because of all the different story lines going on at once. You have Starbuck finding Earth, the final four, President/Apollo, Baltar's cult, and the Cylon cival war. All of the story lines are progressed a bit each week giving you a small taste, but leaving you for more.

Questions after this week's episode:
- Tory becomes a "bad" cylon by killing Cally?
- How do they explain Tory having Cally's baby?
- Will Starbuck's crew go all mutiny on her?
- What's up with Apollo?
- Did all the 6's & 3's just get killed?

awesome stuff.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Battlestar Galactica Season Premiere

Just finished watching the season premiere of the final season of BSG and it was worth the year plus wait. The only downside is that I have to wait another week to see how it goes.

Memorable moments and questions:
- Apollo turning down Adama's offer to return to the fleet.
- Starbuck returning
- Good Six telling the President the final 5 are close
- Tigh and the other's fighting of their new found cylon identities
- The Raider scanning Sam's eyes and realizing he's a cylon...classic

All in all pretty solid. I can't complain because it has been over a year since I saw a new episode. Should be a good season...more later.

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Battlestar Galactica recap...in 8 minutes

I am a huge fan of BSG. But trying to explain the entire show is pretty hard. This clip from Sci-fi.com does a pretty good job of cramming 3 seasons plus into 8 minutes. An extra plus is that it is pretty funny too. Enjoy

The Sun Always Shines on T.V.: Top T.V. shows for me

Alright, it's obviously summer time and that means reruns. So let me share with you some of my favorite t.v. shows on the air right now.

1. Scrubs - Is there a better t.v. show on right now? The writing, acting, and directing is all top notch. I found this show in syndication on Comedy Central and in one the first episode I ever saw I laughed and cried within 10 minutes of each other. Not too many shows can say that. The never-ending story of J.D. and Elliot seems to be making another return for the last season (that's the rumor I read). The entire cast is great from J.D., to Turk, to even Ted, but my favorite has to be Dr. Cox. His sense of humor is great. I think we all wish that we could say the things he says at work. Here is a clip of some of his best season one moments.

2. Battlestar Galactica - Ok so if Scrubs is the best comedy on right now than BSG is the best drama on right now. Seriously, the "reimagining" of the classic 70's version is so good. If you were a fan of the original you need to forget everything. Characters have changed sexes, races, and some became Cylons. It took me a half of a season to let go of what I knew and that's when I started to really enjoy it. The bad news is that this show is going off the air after season four. I see this as a good thing, you don't want to have boring scripts and "jump the shark". For those who don't know the BG story follow the link. Now this is technically a sci-fi show, but last season most episodes didn't even leave the ship. The really crappy part is that the season finale was a while ago and we still have to wait until NEXT JANUARY FOR THE CONCLUSION!!!! BTW, there is a free video on Itunes that tells the story up to season 3.

3. Two and a Half Men - This show has kind of jumped the shark after Candi left, but it still has its moments. The chemistry that Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer is great. Once again, some great acting and writing going on here. Some of the stories have become more adult oriented as the show has progressed, but it is still very enjoyable. I think what's makes this show work for me is the interaction between the "does what's right brother" and the "do what I want brother". Throw in an ex-wife, grumpy maid, and a lazy son and you get a solid t.v. show.

4. America's Funniest Homevideos (AFV) - ok this show needs no introduction. It's just a classic show. I never get tired of watching people get scared, falling off of bikes, crashing into anything...it just works. America is full of idiots so this could go on for a long time.

5. Pardon the Interuption - so this isn't technically a prime time show, it still is one of the best sports show out there. Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon discuss the day's sport stories and some celebrity gossip as well. To listen to sports guys talk about American Idol is pretty funny. The nice thing is that Tony is on Monday Night Football and Wilbon now does the NBA for ABC.

Honorable Mention:

The Batman
- yes the cartoon. Listen cartoons aren't for little kids anymore. I think it started with the Batman: The Animated Series back in the 1990's. The writing was more complicated and the artwork was darker. Well this version of Batman started out rough, almost like an anime style of Batman. In season 3, we got Batgirl. In season 4, we got Robin. now as a comic book nerd this pissed me off because everyone knows Robin came into the picture first. But I digress. At the end of season 4 we saw the introduction of the Justice League. Now this has peaked my interest because Justice League and Justice League Unlimited were two of my favorite shows of all time (more on them later). So I can't say where this Batman will rank. It is getting better so I will wait and see.

Alright so those shows are still on. Next time I will look at my favorite shows that aren't on anymore.
